| Wrong Turn - DVD This is the movie that the TCM remake could have been if it had tried to stay faithful to its source material and try having more substance than style. In this tale, a young man on his way to a job interview decides to skirt a large traffic jam in West Virginia by taking the road less traveled in hopes that he can get to his destination in time. On his way there he gets distracted by a deer and hits a parked truck, totalling his car in the process. The passengers of the truck are ok, having been outside their vehicle checking out its tires because somebody had strewn barbed wire across the road and immoblizing their car. The young man and other group, lead by Eliza Dushku, decide to go off and look for help, not realizing that they are being hunted by several mountain men and that they will be in for the most terrifying day of their lives. This movie takes what should be a cliche and by the numbers story and makes it interesting with its likeable characters and quick pace and ample scares. It's a fun romp with some truly horrifying villains and a feel that reminds me of a polished TCM. Eliza is great as usual and this film single-handedly makes up for the travesty that was Soul Survivors on her horror resume. The other actors do well with their roles and transcend the usual dope smoking, horny teens while embracing that stereotype fully. All in all a great film that is worth checking out for one of the year's truly great horror films. |
