Hellboy

Not since Spider-man hit the screen a few years ago has a comic book movie come along that is done with impeccable style and faithfulness to the source material. Based on the comic of the same name, Hellboy bursts into action first in the 40s with some good old Nazi killing and then in the present day where Hellboy is part of a secret goverment organization that fights off the evil monsters of the world.

It seems that the Nazis that were defeated by the Allies when Hellboy first came into the world are back to try and finish what they started, which is bring back the old chaos gods to do a little people killing. It's up to Hellboy and his friends to make sure that doesn't happen, resulting in a thrill filled and comic ride through the universe that was created by Mike Mignola on the page and now translated to the screen by director Guillermo Del Toro, who is no stranger to comic book movies himself, having directed Blade 2.

Ron Perlman does a fantastic job as Hellboy. His trademark nondescript features work well in this case, letting us focus more on the character than the man behind the makeup as we might have been prone to do if a more distinct actor like the Rock or Vin Diesel had the role. Perlman truly shines, bring a true sense of humanity to the demon born comic hero and his star crossed love affair with Selma Blair's pyrokinetic Liz.

Go see this film while it is still on the big screen. Hellboy is a larger than life hero who likes to kick ass and take names and chomp cigars like the detectives of old. I can't wait to see if they make a sequel so we can continue the great adventure that is started with this movie. Also, go buy the comics too and show some Hellboy support.
