| Ginger Snaps Although it might sound like a porno, I assure you that it isn't the case with this direct to video werewolf flick. Ginger and Bridget are weird sisters. They like to make slideshows of themselves faking suicides and murders and show it in class as a project and are pretty dark all around. It seems that their age is catching up with them though when Ginger starts getting her period and is attacked by a strange creature in the park that is subsequently killed by a car. Now Ginger is getting strange urges in addition to the normal ones felt by teens and her sister is noticing the changes and rushing to find a way to cure her before werewolf carnage ensues. This import from Canada takes the werewolf story in a a new direction. In addition to using it as metaphor for sexual awakening, there is also an undercurrent of sexually transmitted diseases as Ginger infects one of the guys she is with and he starts showing some feral tendencies as well. It's a decent twist that one usually sees in the vampire flicks and it's nice that it is pulled off well and that werecreatures finally get some love that they have been denied. The parts are well played by Katherine Isabelle (hotness made flesh) and Emily Perkins, with a supporting role of Mimi Rogers as their mother who wants to keep everything a secret and help her little girl no matter what. The story is tight and keep you interested from the outset but it starts to meander a bit at the end but builds to a fine coda and a showdown between sister and werewolf. And lots of people get eaten as well. If you like monster movies and have been jonseing for a good werewolf flick, check this film out. It has spawned one sequel already and there's a prequel in the works as well though I really don't approve of those since they usually muck up the story and you know what's going to happen anyway. Still, if they are half as good as the first, they'll definately be a treat to view. |
