| Day of the Dead Special Edition DVD It's a fantastic day when one of your favorite movies comes out as a special edition DVD package and this was no exception. The DVD case is a folding affair with a velcro seal that is a cut-out picture of Bub and looks really snazzy thanks to some amazing Chiodo artwork. Similarly, the liner notes are given to us in the form of Dr. Logan's notes, complete with doodles and spots of blood on them and are really quite informative and amazing. The movie itself looks rather crisp with vivid colors and a great selection of commentary tracks, including a fanboy-ish affair by Rules of Attraction director Roger Avary. Also included on the DVD are a documentary, a featurette and much more to get mileage out of your zombie buck. Day of the Dead is one of those movies that divides fans of the series. It is a logical progression from the previous entry and takes the whole zombie apocalypse to a new level with humans hiding underground in a world that is taken over by the undead. Some people don't think it measures up to Dawn of the Dead, which is a true masterpiece and others hold it higher than that vaunted predecessor. While I don't think it is as entertaining as Dawn, I do think that it is a fantastic movie with some spetacular looking zombie make-up and gore effects and a plot that keeps you moving along and director and writer George Romero does an awesome job of showing the darker side of human nature when you're at the end of the line and things look their darkest. This film is the current end of the Dead Trilogy by Romero, though hopefully he'll be able to get another film off the ground soon to add real closure to the series. As it stands, the version you see now is a radical departure from the original script which showed the end of the zombie plague but still holds up well. |
