| Bubba Ho-Tep I've been waiting to see this film for quite some time and with the limited release it got, I would have had to brave the city to go see it and since I was pressed for time around then, I missed it. Now that it has a release on dvd I have viewed it three times already and it was definitely worth the wait. The main character is an aging Elvis played by Bruce Campbell who survived his untimely death by switching with an impersonator in the years before and laying low. After being bedridden for quite some time and dealing with a penile growth, he is one night attacked by a scarab beetle and finds a black JFK, played by Ossie Davis, lying on the floor. This sparks the sense of adventure in both men and they try to find out what has happened to the both of them and how it relates to a bigger terror. They eventually piece together that there is a mummy on the loose that is stealing the souls of the elderly to survive and that it's up to them to stop the undead horror before it gets them too. It sounds like an odd movie, and it is, but it strikes all the right chords as a piece on aging, fame and killer mummies. Both leads are played wonderfully and they have great chemistry together was well as a fantastic comic wit. The direction, likewise, is exceptional, playing the tale seriously and without the hamminess that might be found if Hollywood had gotten their hands on this film. The dvd comes in a limited edition slipcover and features two great commentaries, deleted scenes, behind the scenes and more. It's a great package for an awesome film. Check it out, you'll love it too. |
